Tahir Sharan, a physicist and researcher from Afghanistan, and former head of the country’s Atomic Energy Commission, has been elected as a member of the Royal Society of Canada in 2026.
The Royal Society of Canada announced its list of new members through a message on its X account, which includes Tahir Sharan’s name.
The society emphasized that Mr. Sharan has contributed to the expansion of international cooperation, including collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency, in the peaceful use of nuclear science through public engagement and leadership in the formulation and implementation of nuclear policies.
It further stated that his activities have strengthened scientific capacities, higher education, and international collaborations.
Additionally, the Royal Society of Canada noted that Mr. Sharan combines internationally recognized research in theoretical physics with distinguished scientific leadership, and his research in the fields of “atomic science, atomic physics, and nonlinear quantum optics” has advanced our understanding of the ultrafast dynamics of electrons and molecules.
The new members of the Royal Society of Canada are set to be officially introduced at a ceremony in Ottawa on November 13.
It is worth noting that membership in the Royal Society of Canada is one of the highest scientific and cultural honors in the country, awarded to distinguished researchers, artists, and scientists from across Canada.
Tahir Sharan is currently teaching and conducting research in the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto.
