OCHA, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, has recently announced that without urgent funding, millions of people in Afghanistan will lose access to life-saving care.
In a message posted on its X account, the agency called for financial support for humanitarian projects in Afghanistan.
OCHA further emphasized that due to budget cuts, nutritional programs for 5.7 million children and mothers are at risk in 2026.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs added that every child deserves the opportunity for healthy and strong growth.
OCHA issued this warning coinciding with the “peak malnutrition season” in Afghanistan.
This comes as two weeks ago, UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, also warned that with the approach of the peak season for malnutrition and food insecurity, 3.7 million children in Afghanistan are at risk of malnutrition.
UN-related agencies have repeatedly expressed concern this year about budget cuts and the worsening conditions of poverty and health for citizens, particularly mothers and children in Afghanistan.
The United Nations states that nearly 22 million people in Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance this year.
To address this situation, the organization has requested a budget of $1.71 billion; however, only 16 percent of this budget has been secured in the first half of the year.
