The UN Women’s section has recently stated that women must remain at the center of addressing the needs of flood victims across Afghanistan.
In a message posted on its X account, the organization emphasized the importance of ensuring that the needs of girls and women are addressed in the relief efforts.
This comes as parts of Afghanistan have experienced devastating and deadly floods over the past six days, resulting in the loss of lives and the destruction of numerous homes.
The Disaster Management Authority of the interim Afghan government has reported that due to heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides in the past 48 hours, ten people have died and six have been injured.
Taj Mohammad Hemat, the deputy spokesperson for this authority, stated on Saturday (July 26) that these figures were recorded in Kabul, Kapisa, Panjshir, Parwan, Khost, Paktia, Paktika, Logar, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar, Zabul, and Badakhshan.
According to the Disaster Management Authority’s statistics, over 630 residential houses were destroyed in the recent floods over the past two nights, affecting more than 2,700 families.
Additionally, the International Organization for Migration and OCHA had previously reported that flood victims in Nuristan urgently need services such as shelter and food supplies.
Based on the latest statistics from the Disaster Management Authority of the interim government, 24 people lost their lives and 80 were injured in last week’s floods in Nuristan.
Government officials have also urged people to avoid residing or engaging in activities in areas at risk of flooding or where warnings have been issued by the meteorological department to prevent a recurrence of such casualties and damages.
