Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, has recently stated that Afghan refugees in Iran are among the most vulnerable groups and are often overlooked.
Mr. Bennett expressed regret over the continuation of death sentences in Iran, calling the execution of Afghan citizens in the country tragic.
Previously, Richard Bennett and a group of independent human rights experts from the United Nations condemned the resumption of military conflicts between Washington and Tehran and their expansion into other regions.
UN experts warned that neglecting agreed commitments to end the war “weakens the prospects for peace, harms the rights of war victims, and undermines the mutual trust necessary for a sustainable end to conflicts.”
They emphasized that civilians should not bear the costs of these conflicts and that all parties must adhere to international human rights and humanitarian laws, particularly the principles of distinction between military and civilian targets, proportionality in attacks, and precautions to protect civilians.
In the statement from UN experts, it is mentioned that military attacks and counterattacks between the U.S. and Iran on the nights of July 12 and 13 marked a new phase of escalation in the crisis, raising concerns about further escalation of conflicts in the region.
Experts expressed concern over reports of damage to civilian infrastructure in Iran, including ports, energy networks, transportation lines, and service facilities, warning that such attacks could disrupt people’s access to food, medicine, and essential services.
