The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has stated that journalism around the world is facing unprecedented pressures.
In a post on its Facebook account the organization wrote that journalism is confronted with serious threats, including the proliferation of false and misleading information generated with the help of artificial intelligence, censorship, and an increase in attacks against journalists.
UNAMA emphasized that the decline in support for independent media also poses serious threats to the future of journalism in serving public interests.
The organization further questioned what we would lose if free journalism is weakened.
UNAMA added that independent journalism is essential not only for informing the public but also for enhancing transparency, combating corruption, and better managing crises.
These concerns arise as journalists and media in Afghanistan have faced extensive restrictions, security pressures, and a diminishing media landscape since the takeover by the interim government in 2021.
Several organizations supporting journalists have repeatedly expressed concern about threats against journalists, censorship, limited access to information, and the economic challenges faced by independent media in Afghanistan.
