Fariba Hashimi, a cyclist from Afghanistan, secured a silver medal in the women’s road race at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan.
Hashimi crossed the finish line in the Shinshiro cycling competition with a time of 2 hours, 50 minutes, and 5 seconds, finishing in second place.
Guo Li from China won the gold medal, and Leung Wing-yi from Hong Kong took home the bronze medal.
This was Hashimi’s second competition in this edition of the Asian Games.
Additionally, she placed seventh in the women’s individual time trial competition on Sunday.
Hashimi is 23 years old and previously competed for Afghanistan alongside her sister, Yaldoz Hashimi, at the Paris Olympics.
She continues her professional cycling career in Europe.
This comes at a time when, following the return of the interim government to power, women and girls in Afghanistan have been completely banned from participating in all sports disciplines, leading to the disbandment of Afghanistan’s women’s national sports teams.
As a result of this action, many Afghan female athletes who were part of the national team have been forced to leave the country.
