The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has announced the expansion of the “Strong Families” program to prevent drug abuse in Afghanistan, providing support to 1,668 families, including 812 women and 676 girls in the provinces of Logar and Ghazni.
In a message posted on its X account, the agency stated that this program has been launched with the support of the UN’s special trust fund for Afghanistan.
Part of the announcement noted that this program focuses on preventing drug abuse by strengthening parenting skills and teaching family skills.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, this program helps enhance social cohesion in communities facing various challenges by strengthening positive relationships within families.
The agency further emphasized that empowering families and reinforcing parental roles are crucial strategies for preventing drug abuse and reducing social harms.
It is worth mentioning that Afghanistan is one of the countries still grappling with the widespread challenge of drug abuse and its social and economic consequences.
UN agencies have repeatedly warned in recent years that poverty, unemployment, displacement, humanitarian crises, and limited access to support services have increased the risk of turning to drug abuse.
