The United Nations has expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, stating that one in three citizens of the country is facing severe hunger.
In a published statement, the organization noted that budget cuts have limited the World Food Programme’s ability to assist only a small portion of those in need.
The UN emphasized that the World Food Programme requires $500 million in urgent funding before winter arrives to prevent the worsening of the hunger crisis in Afghanistan.
Previously, the World Food Programme had warned about the extent of the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, calling it one of the most severe crises globally.
According to earlier statistics from the World Food Programme, over 17 million citizens of Afghanistan are facing severe food insecurity, and nearly five million children under five years old, as well as breastfeeding and pregnant women, are experiencing severe malnutrition.
The organization had previously stated that it currently has no budget for nutrition prevention programs and needs $540 million in urgent funding to continue its activities over the next six months.
