Ayesha Wahab, a senator from Afghanistan in the state of California, has joined the U.S. House of Representatives after winning in the midterm elections.
Ms. Wahab won the midterm elections and is set to represent California’s 14th congressional district until June 2027.
Ayesha Wahab is the first Afghan-American to enter the U.S. Congress.
Reports indicate that Ayesha Wahab’s parents entered the United States during the Soviet-Afghan conflict in 1980, and Ayesha was born in this country.
Ayesha’s father was killed shortly after her birth, and then her mother also passed away; a situation that led her and her sister to be placed in the foster care system.
Ayesha completed her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science at San Jose State University in 2010 and earned her Master’s degree in Business Administration from California State University in 2013.
In 2024, Wahab completed her doctoral studies in the field of Social Work.
As Ayesha Wahab enters the U.S. Congress, the interim government has deprived women and girls of education and schooling since taking control of Afghanistan. Recently, they closed the doors of medical institutes to girls and women, while the health sector across Afghanistan faces a shortage of personnel.
This action by the current government has resulted in millions of schoolgirls being unable to receive an education.
Additionally, women have been banned from going to gyms, restaurants, public baths, being examined by male doctors, traveling without a male guardian, working in domestic and international non-governmental organizations, and even in United Nations offices in Afghanistan.
According to reports, if this ban continues, nearly four million girls may be deprived of education by 2030.
