The Iranian human rights organization “Haal Vos” has reported that at least 17 Afghan migrants, including women, men, and children, have died due to severe thirst in the “Maksokhteh” area near the Roteck border in the Saravan district of Iran.
In a report published by this human rights organization, it was stated that this incident occurred on Thursday, September 10, and the bodies of the deceased were transferred from the site to a morgue in Khash for preservation.
The report indicated that five of the deceased were members of a family from Baghlan province, all of whom were women. This family included a 45-year-old mother and her four daughters, aged 22, 18, 16, and 14.
Haal Vos also emphasized that among the other victims of this incident, there were at least six children under the age of 14.
Witnesses and relatives of the deceased reported that these individuals faced severe water shortages during their journey and died of thirst. Several of them lost their lives close together.
A relative of the deceased told Haal Vos that the men accompanying this group separated from the women and children midway through the journey, leaving the women and children without sufficient access to water for the remainder of their path.
According to sources, families were only able to transfer the bodies of their relatives after learning about the incident, and there was no possibility to transport other corpses.
Haal Vos also reported that due to a lack of capacity in the Saravan morgue, the bodies of the deceased were transferred to Khash. Families are currently pursuing the transfer and burial of their loved ones four days after the incident occurred.
In videos released by Haal Vos, several individuals can be seen digging multiple graves in an unknown location.
